In 2018, we planted a similar sized plot of flax. We added chicken manure to the soil which seemed to feed the weeds more than it did the flax plants. Our yield was lower this year and a bit disappointing. But we still retted some of the fibres and stored others to see how well they winter or if it even makes a difference. We retted the fibres in a wood-fired hot tub, in an attempt to speed the process and have some control over the temperatures. But after retting, the plants also got stored. I luckily received some Provincial funding to insulate an outbuilding and use it at my studio, so our focus changed from processing the flax to insulating and finishing the studio.
